I love to paddle! I first tried stand-up paddle boarding in Hawaii about 7 years ago. As a Canadian trying to learn how to surf the waves in Hawaii, it didn't take long for me to realize that my career as a pro surfer wasn't in the cards. I then discovered Stand-up Paddleboards (SUP).
Gwen and I rented our first boards out of a shop on the North Shore in Haleiwa. Without any instruction, we struck out onto the open ocean. A couple of tumbles into the drink and we started to get the hang of it. Soon enough we were paddling everywhere, and past the breakers that we were told to stay behind! It was probably not the wisest choice, but we were having so much fun, we just kept on going! We were trying to catch little waves, and thinking with a little practice, we could be as good as Laird Hamilton. That was one of the best days of our trip!
Upon our return to Canada, we promptly decided that we needed boards of our own. It was a struggle to find them, as they were just being introduced here. Today it is much easier to find a great SUP, just head down to your local Flaman Fitness store, and the friendly staff will help you find the right one! Stand-up paddle boarding is a great way to stay in shape over the summer. It strengthens your core and your upper body, and also helps improve your balance and coordination. It is challenging and fun at the same time! I love to go out in the morning, it's calm and serene, and it is the perfect way to start the day!
